Back-to-School Safety Tips

Back to School = Smart + Safe!

As the new school year begins, let’s make safety a priority.

Walking Safety

  • No texting, no headphones, when walking kids should walk alert and aware.
  • Always walk on the sidewalk; if none, walk facing traffic.
  • Stop and look left‑right‑left before crossing and use crosswalks wherever possible.

Bus Safety

  • Teach kids to stand at least three big steps from the curb and wait for the bus to stop fully before getting on.
  • Don’t pass a stopped school bus stop at least 10 ft. back to avoid danger zone.
  • Seat belts (when available) should always be buckled.
    Bike & Scooter Safety
  • Helmets are mandatory always fit and buckle them securely.
  • Ride on the right, single file, stop completely before crossing, and walk bikes across roads.
  • Wear bright clothing; stay alert to car doors and other hazards.

Backpack Safety

  • Keep backpacks light no more than 10% of the child’s body weight.
  • Use padded, adjustable straps and wear both straps to distribute weight evenly.
  • Pack heavy items close to their back.

Drop‑off & Driving Safety

  • Never double‑park or unload across the street this creates blind spots and chaos.
  • Respect school zone speed limits and always yield to pedestrians especially when crossing guards are present.
  • Be vigilant: kids can appear suddenly from behind cars or buses.
