We were honored to welcome Dr. Nicholas J. Van Sickels to our May 11 Board of Health meeting. As Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Control at the University of Kentucky, Dr. Van Sickels has been an invaluable partner in our efforts to protect the community from infectious diseases.

We’re grateful for partners like Dr. Van Sickels who work alongside us every day to keep Lexington healthy. His recent recognition as the 2026 Dr. Rice C. Leach Public Health Hero is a testament to the difference he’s making in our community.

Dr. Van Sickels’ leadership has been crucial during some of our most challenging moments—from coordinating the measles response during a winter storm to ensuring accessible monkeypox vaccinations across central Kentucky. His expertise and collaborative approach have strengthened our ability to respond quickly and effectively to emerging health threats.
